MARYLAND TREE EXPERT LICENSE

Anyone who practices tree care in Maryland is required to obtain a tree expert license from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Tree service company owners and independent professional arborists must have a tree expert license and must follow all laws regarding tree care and tree removal within the state of Maryland.

Tree care includes all types of tree work including tree pruning, tree removal, tree insect and disease control, and tree fertilization. The Maryland DNR adheres to the tree care standards set by the Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) and the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), known as the ANSI A300 standards. Tree expert licensing promotes proper tree care, safety, and honest business practices among the tree services and arborists in Maryland. The tree expert license must be renewed annually.

The Maryland Tree Expert Law encompasses all tree work done for compensation on both private and public property in Maryland. The law, adopted in 1945, was enacted to protect consumers by licensing qualified and insured tree service companies and arborists. Another requirement of the Tree Expert Law is that it requires a tree service or arborist to provide an estimate in writing for any recommended tree care services.

Besides tree expert licensing, there are other qualifications to look for when you need to find a tree service or arborist. Credentials such as TCIA accreditation, having an ISA Certified Arborist on staff, or membership in tree care trade associations helps to insure that the tree service has adequate insurance, high safety standards, and trained arborists.

For more information, or to find out if a tree service or arborist has a tree expert license, visit the Maryland DNR website at:
